Things to do in Cheviot and North Canterbury

Cheviot
Cheviot is midway between Kaikoura and Waipara, making it an ideal base for exploring North Canterbury.

There are so many things to see and do in Cheviot and the surrounding region:
  • Cheviot Museum – open Saturdays 10am – 12 noon and Sundays 2pm-4pm, October to June.
  • Cheviot Hills Domain – at the south end of town, this domain with many mature exotic trees used to be part of a pioneering farm.
  • Gore Bay, for great surfing, swimming and fishing.
  • St Anne’s Lagoon – a pic
    nic spot and wildlife refuge just north of the town.
  • Coastal walks from Gore Bay and the Gore Bay Tourist Drive, past Cathedral Cliffs and historic Port Robinson.
  • Fantastic freshwater fishing in the Hurunui River estuary.
  • The Domett Sunday Market, held at the picturesque Mainline Station Café, September to April.

Kaikoura
Kaikoura is an internationally recognized venue for amazing whale watching, and its highly acclaimed selection of sea food such as crayfish. Kaikoura also boasts many fine coastal walks and great fishing in the sea, the rivers, lakes and streams.

Waipara
Waipara is one of the most rapidly growing wine regions in the country, with an ever-expanding number of cellar door operations. Visit one of the beautiful wineries for a taste of the regions best!

Hanmer Springs
Inland, Hanmer Springs nestles in a quiet Alpine Valley. Hanmer Springs is the South Island’s famous spa destination. The hot springs have been developed into a fantastic water playground, with hot pools, spas, waterslides and outdoor pools. In the winter, you can ski at the Hanmer Springs Ski field. Hanmer Springs also has a range of adventure activities available for all ages and levels of fitness.
